Biography

Havens, LaVerne H. 

 LaVerne H. Havens, Jr., 66, of Athens, PA, passed away unexpectedly the evening of Thursday, November 5, at his home. He was born December 10, 1942, son of the late Laverne Havens, Sr. and Julia Hall Havens, of Sayre, PA. Vern graduated from Sayre High School in the class of 1961 and served in the U.S. Navy from 1961 to 1965 in the Mediterranean Fleet and was part of the blockade in the Cuban Missile Crisis. He graduated from Broome Community College and began working at IBM and then Lockheed Martin in Owego, NY where was an employee for 39 years before retiring in 2004. Vern was an avid fisherman and liked working on remodeling projects around his home. His favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren and shopping on Ebay for a variety of quirky items. Vern is survived by his beloved wife, Lucy, his two daughters, Michelle and Neil Charlton of Sterling, VA and Christine and Andrew Hafer of Owego, NY, granddaughter Julia and grandsons Beckett and Alec, and his brother Douglas and his wife Diana of Athens, PA, brother Harry and his wife Pat of Waverly, NY, sister Jane and huband Lee Wark of Sayre, PA, and brother Mark Havens of Port Canaveral, FL. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins as well as his Aunts, Martha Adams and Pat Hall, and sister-in-law, Shirley Short, and brothers-in-law, Bob and Nolan Short.

A gathering of family and friends will be held on Sunday November 8, 2009 from 2-4 PM at the Blauvelt Funeral Home 625 Broad St., Waverly NY.

Funeral services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions in Vern's memory be made to Stray Haven, 194 Shephard Road, Waverly, NY and Ti-Ahwaga Community Players, 42 Delphine Street, Owego, NY 13827.
