Biography

Crouse, Howard E. 

 Howard E. Crouse of Sayre, PA and Three Mile Bay, NY passed away Tuesday, March 30, 2010 at Elderwood in Waverly, NY at the age of 91. Howard was born in Cape Vincent, NY on November 11, 1918 to Roy and Katherine Robbins Crouse. He graduated from Dexter High School in Dexter, NY. He was employed by NY Air Brake, Watertown NY until 1962 when relocated to Athens, PA where he was employed by Ingersoll Rand in Athens, PA. During his employment at IR he worked as the foreman of the Heat Treat Plant.

Howard was a decorated combat veteran. He served in the Pacific Theater during World War II. As a Crew Chief on PBY Catalina Flying Boats in VPB 25, he spent almost two years conducting Black Cat operations predominately behind enemy lines and participated in the liberation of the Philippine Islands. His awards include; the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (2 awards), Asiatic Pacific Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, American Theater Ribbon, and the Victory Ribbon.

In 1947, he married Mildred DeCarlo in Watertown, NY.

He is survived by his wife, Mildred; Children: sons Michael of Elmira, Philip (Fran) of Athens and daughter Paula (John) McNeil of Athens. His grandchildren: Todd (Kari), Patrick, Ryan Crouse; Kristin (Charles) Kennedy, Jamie and Scott McNeil, and Katherine and Joe Crouse, and four great-grandsons. Also surviving him is one niece Doris Dingman of Cape Vincent NY. He is predeceased by his sisters, Doris Crouse and Ona Allen.

He was a life member of the American Legion Post 0583 in Dexter, NY and VFW Post 1536 Sayre, PA. Howard enjoyed summers at Point Peninsula on Lake Ontario.

At the request of the family there will be no calling hours. A Memorial Service will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers donations can be made in Howard’s memory to the charity of one’s choice.
