Biography
Cannavino, Ruth E.Our beloved mother and "Gram," Ruth E. Cannavino 88 of Waverly, NY, passed into the arms of the Savior 06/05/2010 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law. She was loved and cherished by those who were blessed to know her. She will not only be remembered for her loving and caring nature but for her great sense of humor and joyous spirit. Born December 29, 1921 in Athens , PA to the late William and Hattie (Bowman) Stranger. Ruth attended school in the Valley and in Owego , N.Y. She later attended the National Youth Organization. She married Anthony (Tony) A. Cannavino on May 24, 1943 in Chemung , NY. She was previously employed by the Blue Swan, Bendix Corporation, Artistic Card, Waverly Central Schools and retired from Hardinge Brothers Inc. Ruth was a member of the Waverly United Methodist Church , a selfless, loving mother and grandmother who put the Lord and others first. Her passion was baking and cooking Italian specialties. She loved traveling with her sister Dorothy and enjoyed children, animals and all of nature.
Ruth is survived by a son David (Cornelia) Cannavino of Waverly, daughters Susan (Dennis) Brady of Waverly and Jean (Terrance) Butler of Webster, NY, sister Geraldine Davis and several nieces and nephews. Beloved grandchildren: Stephanie (Sara Pinaglia) Cannavino, Sanomara (Anthony) Spitzig, Casey Chacona (Arlo Warner), Israel (Melissa) Chacona, Ian (Nina) Butler and Lee Butler. Great grandchildren: Simon, Lorelei, Sebastian and Gabriel Spitzig, Abigail and Isabelle Ruth Chacona and Brianna Butler, brother-in-law, Michael Cannavino.
She was pre-deceased by her husband Tony, brothers Leon and Harold Stranger, sister, Dorothy and brother-in-law John (Art) Russell and sister Stella Stranger.
A time for gathering with family and friends will be Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Waverly United Methodist Church from 10-11 AM. The celebration of Ruth's life will follow the visitation with the Rev. Ann Bey Canfield honoring her memory at 11 AM. You are asked to consider expressions of sympathy be made in lieu of flowers to Waverly United Methodist Church, 158 Chemung Street, Waverly, New York 14892 or Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepard Rd., Waverly, NY 14892.
