Alvera J. Owen

Alvera J. Owen, 96 of Waverly passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 at home with her loving family by her side.

She was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Augusta Anderson Johnson; husband, John Owen; daughter, Joanna Owen Mistico; infant brother, Lawrence Emil Johnson; and sisters, Inez (Ragnar) Person and Lucile (Marvin) Planeaux; sister-in-law, Vivian Peterson.

Alvera is survived by her children, David Owen of Waverly, and Mary Suzanne Owen of Waverly; grandchildren, Mary Jo Maranghi of OR, Jason Morton of CA, Derek Turner of MO, James (Sharon) Bonney of Brewerton, NY, Rose Bonney of CA, Jacob Bonney of CA, and Jesse (Cara) Bonney of CA; great grandchildren, Giovanna Alvera, Isabella Rose, Liam, and Gabriella Maranghi of OR,  Henry Bonney, Genesis Bonney,  and Joseph Bonney of Brewerton, NY, Ila Bonney of CA; nieces, Sandra Murelle of Sayre, and Christine Planeaux; nephews, Darvin and Dean Planeaux; great nephews, Gregg (Michele) Murelle, Gary Murelle, and Glenn (Amy) Murelle.

Alvera was born on June 20, 1920 the youngest of three sisters born to Swedish immigrants.  She assisted her father, a pioneer milk dealer, in delivering bottled milk by horse and wagon to customers in the Falconer Jamestown area. She spent many enjoyable summer days swimming at Chautauqua Lake.  She had a lifelong passion for music which started at age 7 playing the violin, and at age of 13 she was invited to play in the Chautauqua Symphony.  She graduated Fredonia Teachers College in 1942 with a Bachelors of Art in Music and later returned to get her Masters in Music in 1957 where she also played in the college symphony.  Alvera student taught for two years in Bradford, New York where she met the love of her life, John.  She chose to begin her teaching career in Waverly after seeing that three railroads nearby made it possible for her to visit John on the military bases in the south before deploying to Europe during World War II.  She was hired by Mary Muldoon in 1944 to teach Junior High Music.  During her 40 year career of teaching Music, she taught Elementary, Junior and Senior High Music.  Her 1950 junior high boy’s chorus was top rated in the NY State Music Festival which included High School level competition.  She was the music, choral, and orchestra director.  Alvera was the organist and choir director at St. John Lutheran Church in Sayre from 1950 – 1975.  She was an avid Yankee’s fan and followed Syracuse Orange Basketball.  She enjoyed following her son’s long and successful athletic career.  She was very proud of her students and teaching was the highlight of her life. The relationship she had with her students continued throughout her life and she never forgot them. She insisted that her students learn and sing by heart their high school alma-mater.  After retirement, she took up golf and enjoyed playing the game with her many wonderful golfing friends.  

A time of calling will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2017 from 4 to 6 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY.  Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. John Lutheran Church, 207 S. Hopkins Street, Sayre, PA with Pastor Melinda Artman officiating and burial to follow at Forest Home Cemetery in Waverly.
