Daniel B. Safford, 94 a retired teacher and long-time Waverly resident passed on Thursday, August 11, 2016 at his home with his family by his side. Born in Athens, PA to the late George and Grace(Shores)Safford. Daniel was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather; avid history and literature reader; dedicated teacher at Sayre HS (1960-1962), Tioga Central HS (1962-1964), and Waverly HS (1964-1988), where he taught English literature and directed the fall and spring plays. He was also a life-long theater actor, performing in road productions, summer theaters in Connecticut and Naples, NY, the Cider Mill Playhouse in Endicott, NY, and the hanger theater in Ithaca, NY, was a member of the company of the Mark Twain Musical Drama in Elmira for several years, and had previously performed in and around the New York City area on stage and early television.
Daniel graduated from Waverly HS in 1939, and attended the New York Academy of Dramatic arts from 1939-1940. He completed his education at Ithaca College in 1948 after serving in the United States Army from 1945-1946 as a medical corpsman and in Special Services. After a return to New York, Daniel was on the faculty/staff of Stevens College in Columbia, MO from 1953-1959. It was during this time that he married Virginia Johnston.
Daniel was predeceased by his parents; his brothers, George and Bernard Safford; sister, Catherine Safford; and his loving wife of 62 years, Virginia; son-in-law, James Page. He is survived by his children, Gabriella (Lawrence) Albanese of Albion, NY, Dr. Susan(Michael Denison)Safford of Oxford, PA, Daniel, Jr. (Wanda) of Frederick, MS, Mrs. Pamela Page of Waverly, NY, and Geoffrey (Rev. Lisa) Kruse-Safford of Rockford, IL; grandchildren, Andrew, Sarah, Matthew, Daniel III, Jessica, Nathan, Zachary, Arianna, Jordan, Moriah, Rhiannon, Miriam; two great-grandchildren, Henry and Weston; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be a time of visitation on Monday, August 15, 2016 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, followed by services at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street in Waverly, NY with Rev. Dr. Dianne Bentley and Rev. Lisa Kruse-Safford officiating. There will be a brief committal service in Wysox, PA. Memorial donations may be made in Daniel’s name to the Stray Haven and Lourdes Hospice of Binghamton, NY.
