Howard Wm. Smith, Jr., 91, of formerly of Talmadge Hill in Waverly passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 at Riverview Manor in Owego.
He was born on April 6, 1927 in Waverly, New York. He was the son of the late Howard Smith and Christine (Mace) Smith of Chemung.
Howard was a Seaman First Class in the US Navy Pacific Theater. He served from May 22, 1944 to June 10, 1946.
Howard farmed, worked for US Soil Conservation and drove school bus after retirement.
Howard was a member of the North Barton Grange for 75 years. He served on Executive committee.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Robert; sisters, Cecile and Barb; and infant daughter, Antoinette.
Howard is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Viola Mae Shipman Smith; his children, James (Diane) Smith and Stan (Lisa) Smith, both of Waverly; grandchildren, James (Kim) Smith of Lockwood, Amy Smith of Waverly; Sheila (Ty) Armstrong of Kentucky; Jonathan Smith of Waverly, and Lee “Bear” (Lexy) Smith of Ithaca; great grandchildren, Daylen Smith, Cora Smith, Drew Smith and Kyra Smith; sisters, Betty Stedge of Bryon, NY, Virginia Knickerbocker of Elmira and Shirley (Harry) Hartman of Horseheads; brother, Nelson (Carol) Smith of Elmira; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A time of calling will be held on Monday, December 31, 2018 from 11 to 12 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY. Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 31, 2018 at 12:00 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY with Frank Wasielewski officiating and burial to follow in Tioga Point Cemetery, Athens. Memorial donations may be made in Howard’s name to N. Barton Grange, Ellis Creek Road, Waverly, NY 14892.
