Biography

James D. Halton

James D. Halton, 83 of Waverly, NY passed away on Tuesday March 29th, 2016 at his home on Douglas Drive after a short unexpected battle with brain cancer. His wife and children felt blessed to all be at home with him when he left this life to be with The Lord.

Jim was preceded by his parents, Thomas M. Halton and Marion C. Pruyne; and brother, Richard J. Halton.  He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Ruth Halton; his children, Kevin of Salt Point, NY, Brian of Sayre, PA, and Gay Lynn (Gigi) of Cairo, NY; his siblings, Bill, Bob, Dan, Pat, Chuck, and Mary Ellen.  Jim dearly loved his nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Jim grew up in South Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School.  He received a B.S. from Penn State, an M.A. from S.U.N.Y.  Oswego, and an A.S. from Penn State.  After serving as an officer in the U.S. Navy, he started his career teaching at Waverly Central Schools until 1979.  Jim then continued his career as a mechanical engineer at Ingersoll-Rand in Athens until his retirement.

Jim’s many interests included hiking, fishing, skiing, reading, singing, whistling, recitation, playing his trombone, and at age 65, he had the great pleasure of summiting Mount Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48. His greatest joy however, came from his community activities which included his dedication to the Owego Nazarene Church, (in earlier years, North Waverly Chapel), Valley Chorus, Pro Musica and Kirby Band. Jim loved talking to people whether friend or stranger, quietly conveying his belief to “love your neighbor as yourself.”

A time of gathering for friends and family will be held on Sunday, April 3, 2016 from 3 to 5 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad St., Waverly.  Funeral services will be held on Monday, April 4, 2016 at 11:00 AM at the Owego Church of the Nazarene, 3732 Waverly Road, Owego with Pastor Phillip Nase officiating followed by a luncheon at the church.  Burial will take place at 2:00 PM at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens.
