John “Jack” F. Langan, 83, of Sayre, PA passed Sunday, December 27, 2015 at home with his loving family by his side. Born on July 6th 1932 in Moscow, PA, he was the son of the late John M. and Dolores (Miller) Langan.
He was preceded in death by his son, Brian Langan; and daughter, Maureen Langan. Jack is survived by his wife of 58 years, Renee (Gibney) Langan.
Surviving, in addition to his wife, are; sister, Ann (Gil) Clark of Afton, NY; son, Jack Langan of Candor, NY; daughter, Mary (Larry) Hurley of Athens Township, PA; daughter-in-law, Tammy Langan of Moscow, PA; son, Michael Langan of Sayre, PA; grandson, John A. (Courtney) Langan of San Diego, Calif.; granddaughter, Molly Langan, her fiancé, Patrick Threadgill, and great-granddaughter, Quinn Threadgill of Philadelphia; granddaughter, Justine Lisella of Portland, OR; granddaughter, Meghan Hurley of Waverly, PA; granddaughter, Emily Lisella of Scranton, PA; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Jack was a Communicant and Eucharistic Minister at the Church of the Epiphany in Sayre, which included a time of ministering to the people in the Elmira Correctional Facility. He was also a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus. He was generous with his time, talent, and treasure—always ready to lend a helping hand. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
Jack was a 1953 graduate from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy (University of Science of Philadelphia), and served in the Army’s Helicopter Corps (Germany) in 1954. He married Renee in 1957, and opened Langan’s Rexall Pharmacy in Sayre, PA (now CVS) in 1961, and opened Langan’s Rexall Store in Ulster, PA in 1964, and Langan’s Gift Gallery in Sayre in 1965. Jack was named Director of First National Bank of Bradford County in 1972 and was recognized for 20 years of exceptional service. In 1988, Jack founded and was first President of the Bridge, an organization that combines social and church services. In 1992 he established Eucharistic Adoration & Devotion at Epiphany Parish (ensuring there is a member available in the chapel 24/7 – which continues to this day). In 1992, he opened Spirit Crest Ostrich Farm, followed in 1993 with Evergreen Terrace and then Hickory Heights in 1995.
Over the years, Jack computerized the personal pharmacy and built the first drive-thru pharmacy in the Valley. He was a progressive business man who was President of the Sayre Business Association and the Sayre Chamber of Commerce. He ran pharmacies for Tioga General Hospital and Bradford County Manor. He was also an International Scuba Diver and preformed underwater rescue.
A time of gathering with family and friends will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M, Wednesday, December 30, 2015, at Blauvelt Funeral Home: 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY. A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Thursday, December 31, 2015 at 10:00 AM at the Church of Epiphany, 304 South Elmer Ave., Sayre, PA with Fr. Vincent Langan officiating. This Mass with also commemorate his son, Brian Langan.
