Jo Sjostrom, born June 27, 1921 in Sayre, Pa., the daughter of William M. Westbrook and Mary Ann (Ambs) Westbrook passed away on December 30, 2015 at the Skilled Nursing Center, Towanda Memorial Hospital.
Jo (or Josey), as she was known by her friends and caregivers, was predeceased by beloved her husband, E. William Sjostrom, her grandson, Jason Alencikas and her brother, William E. Westbrook. She is survived by her son, William J. Sjostrom and daughter-in-law Patricia of West Warren, Pa and by her daughter, JoAnn Alencikas Olson and son-in-law Mark (Coach Olson) of Apollo Beach, Fl. Jo was also blessed with six grandchildren, Bill, Suzanne, Janette, and triplets Jason, Jessica and Stacey, and seven great-grandchildren, Zachary, Lauren, Zane, Caleb, Sierra, Jacob and Addyson. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
Jo was a long time resident of Miller street in Sayre. She graduated from Sayre High School in 1939 and was employed by The Blue Swan Mills in Sayre and Remington Rand in Elmira, NY. She was a member of the Sayre Christian Church.
Jo’s whole life was about doing things with and for her family. She loved watching the moon and collecting and decorating with red hearts. She will be greatly missed. She was a fabulous Gramma and a great baker.
She married the love of her life, E. William (Bill) Sjostrom, on September 28, 1940. During WWII, they lived in San Jose, CA where Bill was stationed in the US Navy. Jo and her husband enjoyed summers with her son’s family at a campsite at Kingstown Beach on Cayuga Lake and winters with her daughter’s family in Miami Florida. In later years, before moving to the Memorial Hospital
Personal Care Home, she lived in West Warren, PA with her son’s family and enjoyed traveling to Hudson, Florida for the winter.
The family will receive friends at the Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY on Wednesday from 10 -12. The funeral service will be held at the same location on Wednesday at 12:00 PM. Burial will follow at the Tioga Point Cemetery.
