It is with great sadness that the family of L. Jeffrey Millard announces his passing on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at the age of 73 years.
Jeff was born in Sayre, PA, to Elizabeth and Seymour Millard, on June 29, 1942. He graduated from Waverly High School in 1960 and went on to earn a Bachelors degree in Education from Albany State University and a Masters degree from Elmira College. He returned to his alma mater and dedicated the next 39 years to educating young men and women both in the classroom and on the athletic field. He began his teaching career in Business education and later taught History, a subject that he was most passionate about as evidenced by anyone who ever watched an episode of Jeopardy with him. His outstanding coaching career was in softball and football. He began the WHS softball program in 1977 and coached his teams to several championships. Over a 29 year span, he held both assistant and head football coaching positions at the JV and Varsity levels. Spending most of his career at the JV level with a record of 109-39-4, he also led four teams to undefeated seasons as well as a 22 game winning streak. Of higher value to Jeff than any win though, was being awarded the Elmira Football Officials Sportsmanship award in 1992 and being inducted into the Waverly Hall of Fame in 2003. Anyone who had the honor of knowing Jeff knows that sportsmanship and integrity both on the field and in life were his highest priorities.
Jeff greatly enjoyed Penn State football and watching the Mets play baseball. Besides being a sports enthusiast, he loved reading and crossword puzzles. He was also interested in current events and politics. He was a true lifelong learner and a loving, dedicated family man. Jeff touched many lives throughout his community and was highly loved and respected as an educator, coach, mentor, and friend. He was truly a great man.
Jeff will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 49 years, Helen, and his children Kathy (Jamie) Gorman and MaryBeth (Mark) Worthington. He will also be fondly remembered by his three grandchildren, Michael, Katie, and Ryan, and by his sisters Lynne Scheiderer and Marilyn Rhodes, brothers-in-laws Ron Scheiderer, Mark Rhodes, and Joe Noonan, sister-in-law Dodie Noonan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Jeff was predeceased by his parents and his brother Dale Millard.
A time of gathering with family and friends will be from 4:00 to 6:00 P.M, Friday, January 8, 2016, at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY. A celebration of Jeff’s life will be held on Saturday, January 9, 2016 at 10:00 AM at the Waverly United Methodist Church, 158 Chemung St., Waverly, NY with Rev. Anne Bey Canfield officiating.
