Mary Ellen Sharpsteen, 76, of Waverly passed away at home on Wednesday, October 5, 2016 with her family by her side.
She was predeceased by her parents, Joe and Marie Griffin Roberts; and sister, Lorraine Lowry.
Mary Ellen is survived by her husband of 56 years, Wilbur “Dick” Sharpsteen; children, Gene (Ann) Sharpsteen of Waverly, Pam Casselbury of Chemung, Mary Lea Robinson of Chemung, Rich “Dickie” (Vera) Sharpsteen of Waverly, Steve (Kris) Sharpsteen of Waverly, and Billie Jo McKenzie of Elmira; brother, Joe (Polly) Roberts of FL; sisters, Ann “Pudge” (Don) Peterson of Lockwood, and Joan “Bunny” (Chuck) Lane of NC; 13 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was an avid race fan who enjoyed watching her husband, children and grandchildren and many other family and friends race at the various tracks in the area. She ran the Five Acres bar in Chemung for over 25 years. She was an avid Dale Earnhardt fan, who enjoyed a good steak dinner and shopping along with spending time with her family. Mary Ellen was known for letting you know exactly what she was thinking and she did things when she was good and ready.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Care First Hospice and the Chemung County Health Department for the great care.
A time of gathering for friends and family will be held on Monday, October 10, 2016 from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY. Funeral services will follow at 12:00 PM with Rev. Philip Jordan officiating at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY with burial to follow at Chemung Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made in Mary Ellen’s name to Care First Hospice, 3805 Meads Creek Road, Painted Post, NY 14870.
