Oskar Skjöld

Oskar Skjöld, 37,of East Athens, PA, originally of Stockholm, Sweden, passed away Friday, December 7, 2018, at home after a brief illness. He was born July 1, 1981to Torkel H. Skjöldand Ilona H. (Pospischil) Skjöld inStockholm, Sweden.

After graduating from high school and taking some time to travel, he attended Växjö University where he met Emily Cole who attended as an exchange student in 2007. Following a ten-year relationship, Oskar immigrated to the United States and they were married on October 28, 2017.

Oskar enjoyed computer programming, as he was working to develop a video game with his brother, Max. He also enjoyed learning about gardening and growing and preparing his own food, almost always served with hot sauce. He was often seen walking his dogs by those in East Athens. Whatever he did, he viewed it as an opportunity to enjoy time with his wife, family, and friends. As such, he is loved and will be missed by all who knew him.

He is survived by his loving wife, Emily A. (Cole) Skjöld, his parents Torkel (the late Gunilla) Skjöld and Ilona Skjöld, brother Max Skjöld, Aunt Cecelia Skjöld, father in law and mother in law, Robert and Margaret Cole of East Athens, sister in law, Erica Cole of Johnstown, PA, Emily’s extended family, many friends from near and far, and his canine companions, Journey and Henry.

A time of calling will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 from 4 to 6 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, December 17, 2018 at 6:00 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly, NY with Rev. Melinda Artman and Rev. Trula Hollywood officiating.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting Oskar in person, I feel as though I knew him from all of the wonderful stories told to me about him mostly by his wonderful wife Emily. I’m at a loss for words because when things like this happen it is really only time that can start the healing process. My heart and prayers are with all of you wonderful people as your mourn the loss of such a beautiful soul. Dear Emily, I would like to give my deepest condolences to you.

My name is Erik Wennerholm. You don`t know me but I was Oskars childhood friend from Stockholm. Me and Oskar spent many days together in our youth, and we even did some traveling together. One thing I always remember  about him is that he always had a smile nearby. I will forever cherish our time together. Oskar will be greatly missed.

Kind regards,
Erik Wennerholm

Dear family,
I am, like Erik Wennerholm, a childhood friend of Oskar. We grew up on the same street in Sodra Angby, Bromma, Stockholm. We lived in the houses just across the street from each other.

Oskar was one of  over 10 boys of  the same age on the street. When we were children we spent endless days and evenings together, building treehouses, chasing competing treehouse crews through the gardens of Sodra Angby. With all the imagination that children have.

When we were not outside, we played pretty much every video game there was, on different platforms.
Oskar was as a child already very interested in computers and I remember him setting up BBS (databases) that we accessed through old school modems with baud rates of 9600, 24400, etc... those were the days.

I will remember Oscar as very kind and caring. Traits that it seems followed him throughout the entirety of his life.

I hope that you find strength in this time of mourning and that Oskar’s memory will shine light on you.

I am so sorry and sad to hear about this. I had unfortunately not spoken to Oskar for many years, but during our time growing up in the houses next to each other in Stockholm we played together all the time for more than a decade - whether outdoors or video games.

I will always remember our time together, particularly the late night walks through our neighborhood and the woods surrounding it, excitingly discussing and reliving the latest feat we had pulled off in Ultima Online or another game.

This is truly devastating. I wish you comfort in these tough times.
