Biography

Paul W. Corcoran Jr.

Paul W. "Corky" Corcoran Jr., 73, of Nichols, New York passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018. He was born June 8, 1944, the son of Paul W. "Pat" Corcoran and Julia M. Corcoran. He graduated from Waverly High School and Mansfield University. He also received three masters degrees. Cork worked as a teacher in the Sayre and Athens school districts for twenty-one years. He coached football at Sayre High School for several years and regularly invited the teams to spaghetti suppers prepared by Julia.  He also worked for the New York State Department of Corrections for eighteen years as a teacher and administrator.  After retirement from the Department of Corrections, he devoted his time as a substitute teacher at Waverly High School helping students appreciate the value of education. He was a co-owner of the Cork 'n' Bottle with his mother.  He enjoyed sponsoring his Cork 'n' Bottle softball teams and won a national tournament.

Cork was an avid Notre Dame football fan and enjoyed traveling to South Bend for games with family and friends. He loved his pets including his golden retriever Finneus and his cats. He enjoyed studying history, educating his students, and discussing politics.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his special aunt, Judy Murray; brother-in-law, Edward Kelly; nephew, Michael Kelly; cousin, MaryAnn Mosier and her husband Gerald Mosier and goddaughter, Lisa Mosier. He is survived by his sisters, JoAnne Kelly and Rosemarie (Jerry) Keene; nieces and nephews, Denise (Bruce) Napoli, Gerald (Betty) Keene, Paul (Christina) Keene, Donna (Mark) Bell, Timothy (Pam) Kelly, Maureen (Joseph) Passarelli, Patricia (Michael) Reiter; and several grand nieces and nephews.  He was also survived by his cousin, Debra Mosier, who provided care for him during his extended illness and close friend, William Creedon, Jr.  The family thanks the dedicated care providers at Sayre Personal Care Center, Elderwood Rehabilitation Care Home and Guthrie Hospice for the care given to Cork.

At Cork's request there will be no service. His wishes were that others would honor his memory by volunteering for a cause of their choice or to donate in his memory to Guthrie Hospice, 421 Tomahawk Road, Towanda, PA 18848.   Interment will be at the convenience of the family. Burial arrangements will be provided by Blauvelt Funeral Home625 Broad Street, Waverly, New York.  Please visit their Facebook page or go to “obituaries” at www.blauveltfuneralhome.com.
