Shirley R. Halton, 88, of Waverly, NY passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2018 after an extended illness. Her children rejoice that she is now reunited with her beloved husband, Jim who had already left this world to be with the Lord.
Shirley was predeceased by her parents, Rev. Judd L. Hunter and Daisy I. McCarty; as well as her sisters, Janice Hunter and Mary Jane Noel.
She is survived by her children, Kevin of Salt Point, NY, Brian of Sayre, PA and Gay Lynn (Gigi) of Cairo, NY. Shirley dearly loved her nine grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Shirley grew up in Waverly and graduated from Waverly High School. She attended Houghton College for two years studying liberal arts.
After marrying Jim in 1955, she was delighted to devote her life to her husband and children, but she did much more…She worked as society editor for the (then) Evening Times, substitute taught for Waverly Schools, played the piano and organ for her church, and directed church youth activities, but her greatest work, outside of her family, was owning and operating Honey Tree Day Care. Hundreds of children were blessed by her there.
A small gathering of family and friends will be held at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly with Pastor Tom Hartley presiding. Burial will take place at Tioga Point Cemetery in Athens. Memorial donations may be made in Shirley’s name to Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington, D.C. 20090-6011 or Clinton Alliance Church, 1192 Centre Road, Salt Point, NY 12578.
