Virginia L. Safford, 91, of Waverly passed away on Saturday, February 27, 2016 at Elderwood Care in Waverly.
Virginia was predeceased by her parents, Eugene and Emma Rowland Johnston; brothers, Eugene Jr., Rowland, Norman, David, Thomas, and Ned; and sister, Donna Joan Konicki.
She is survived by her loving husband of 62 years, Daniel Safford; children, Gabriella (Lawrence) Albanese of Albion, Dr. Susan (Michael Denison) Safford of Oxford, PA, Daniel (Wanda) Safford Jr. of Fredrick, MD, Pamela (James) Page of Waverly, and Geoffrey (Rev. Lisa) Kruse-Safford of Rockford, IL; brother, Ivan Johnston of FL; 12 grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
Virginia was a long time member of First United Methodist Church in Sayre and was a substitute teacher in the Sayre and Waverly School districts. During WWII Virginia was proud to have worked for the Huffman Bicycle Company building bikes for the invasion of Italy. She also worked on the Manhattan project.
Virginia met Dan in New York City in 1948 and they were married in Columbia, MO on March 31, 1954.
She enjoyed reading, gardening, and was an excellent seamstress who was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother.
A time of gathering will be held on Tuesday, March 1, 2016 from 4 to 6 PM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 2, 2016 at 10 AM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly with Rev. Dr. Dianne H. Bentley officiating. Burial will be in Wysox Cemetery in Wysox, PA. Memorial donations may be made in Virginia’s name to the Waverly Free Library, 18 Elizabeth St., Waverly, NY 14892.
