After a rich and full life, William (Bill) C. Luft, MD, 85 of Athens, PA passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2016 at his home.
He was predeceased by his parents, George and Carolyn Luft of Goshen, NY and by the mother of his children, Janet Woods Luft.
He is survived by his wife and best friend, Carolyn; his children, Carolyn (Dave) Madden of Athens, PA, Tom (Donna) Luft of Medfield, MA, Libby Luft of Downers Grove, IL, and Dan (Sage) Luft of Somerville, MA; stepson, Dan Davis of Saudi Arabia; grandchildren, Michael Miller of Waverly, Elise Miller of Portland, ME, Zoe and Julia Luft of Medfield, MA, Katya, Alexander, Esther and Nikolai Luft of Somerville, MA; great grandson, Tristan Miller of Waverly; and his sister, Mary Carolyn (Bill) Fenwick of Chalfont, PA and their son Bill Jr and his family from Ithaca, NY.
Bill was born in Goshen, New York on January 25, 1931. He graduated from Goshen High School during which he won the Baush & Lomb Honorary Science Award. This award resulted in a scholarship to the University of Rochester, where he earned his BS and MD. After his internship at Rochester’s Strong Memorial Hospital, he performed his surgical residency at Genesee Hospital followed by his service in the US Air Force in which he was a flight surgeon. He did his anatomic pathology residency at Boston City Hospital and then his clinical pathology residency at University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, MN. He was an assistant pathologist at Genesee Hospital in Rochester, NY before joining the team at Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic as an assistant pathologist in 1967. He was named co-chair of the department in 1970 and remained there until his retirement.
Bill was board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology as well as in the special competence area of chemical pathology. At the time of his certification in chemical pathology, he was one of only 61 pathologist in the entire US to have qualified for this special certification.
During his tenure at Robert Packer, he held numerous teaching appointments including as an associate professor at Hehnemann Medical college in Philadelphia, an adjunct professor in the Division of Physical Therapy for Ithaca College, an Associate Professor, Upstate Medical Center of Syracuse, NY and a Clinical instructor at the Robert Packer Hospital School of Medical Technology. He was a member of several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Pathologist, College of American Pathologist, American Association of Blood Banks, and the American Association for Clinical Chemistry. Over the years Bill was involved in the Boy Scouts. He was proud of being an Eagle Scout.
Bill enjoyed quiet time at home, working in the yard, reading and besting the New York Times crossword puzzles, but he also loved to travel. He and Carolyn enjoyed cruises and exploring the many cities and sights of Europe and the Caribbean as well as travels closer to home. He greatly enjoyed walking the sunny beaches of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and their visits with their children and their families. In addition, he loved classical music, frequently attending performances of the Tri-Cities Opera. He instilled his love of learning, travel and music in his children. Bill was a member of The Valley United Presbyterian Church.
A time of calling will be held on Thursday, September 22, 2016 from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly. Funeral services will follow at 11:00 AM at Blauvelt Funeral Home, 625 Broad Street, Waverly with Rev. Sharan Rosso officiating. A private burial will be in Tioga Point Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Flowers will be provided by the family. Memorial donations may be made in William’s name to Stray Haven Humane Society, 194 Shepard Road, Waverly, NY 14892, Guthrie Hospice, 421 Tomahawk Road, Towanda, PA 18848, or please donate blood. His motto was “Please Give Blood” and he had given 17 gallons of blood over the course of his lifetime.
